Great Gatsby Parties

In the first three chapters in "Great Gatsby," there are three different parties that are introduced to us readers throughout the story. These parties so happen to be Daisy's party shown in the first chapter, Myrtle's shown during the second chapter, and of course Gatsby's which is shown during the third chapter. If I were to attend one of the parties, however, it would most likely be Gatsby's party because I feel that it was the most exciting and fashionable out of the three parties.

In Chapter One, the occasion of Daisy's dinner party occurs. This dinner party is located in the East Egg which is known to be the better of the two out of the East egg and the West egg. This being said, the party was very fancy and nice just based on the location of it. In the text, it states, "East Egg glittered along the water." This quote describes how nice living in the location of East Egg really is. This being said, dinner was not the greatest as Tom seemed to always have something to say during the dinner and proposes the idea of a book named "The rise of the Colored Empires." The book is racist and is not very appealing. Daisy also seemed to not have the best relationship with Tom and declared that she had been "cynical" since she last met with Nick. Tom also leaves dinner to talk with his loved one in New York also showing the rough relationship he has with his wife. Overall, the dinner was kind of awkward and is something that I would not like to take part in. Because of this, I would not want to take part in Daisy's dinner party.

Throughout Chapter Two, we take part in Myrtle's party. In this chapter, Tom takes Nick to the edge of the Valley of Ashes. The Valley of Ashes can be described as "A fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air." Because of this, we can infer that the Valley of Ashes is very rough and a place where you would not want to live. Here Wilson and his wife Murtle live. Tom happens to be having an affair with Murtle. At the party, there is a lot of talk about Jay Gatsby behind his back. Catherine claims that he is related to a German leader. From here the group gets wasted and Myrtle chants Daisy's name in order to bother Tom who in response breaks her nose. Overall, this dinner was not great and seemed to end poorly which is why I also would not want to attend this party.

The final party talked about in Chapter Three is Gatsby's party. This party is located in the West Egg at Jay Gatsby's mansion. This party is very packed and few people were actually invited that showed up. In the text, it states, "On buffet tables, garnished with glistening hors d’oeuvre, spiced baked hams crowded against salads of harlequin designs and pastry pigs and turkeys bewitched to a dark gold. In the main hall, a bar with a real brass rail was set up, and stocked with gins and liquors and with cordials are so long forgotten that most of his female guests were too young to know one from another." This shows the very rich nature of the party. People from both the East and West egg attended. Nick finds Jordan Baker who seems to be in a bad mood. People in the party would gossip about Jay Gatsby who people thought of as somewhat mysterious. Jordan and Nick go off to find Gatsby and they go into the library which is perfect, they were shocked to see that all of the books were real. In the garden, Nick finds Gatsby who appears as very formal and intelligent. From here, Nick walks home very late. Out of all of the parties, I feel as if Gatsby's party would be the one that I would attend because it is open to everyone and seems to be where I would fit in the best.
