Paper 3 Section B
Based on the information and what I just read, I can assume that Raina is in the post telegraphic stage where kids begin to function words together and have correct use of the passive and start to get a good understanding of the basic English language. Raina starts off by telling her mom, “Let's go this way.” At this stage in life, kids are very demanding and tend to want things to always go their way and this can very easily be seen in the first part of this piece of writing because of how demanding she was to her mom. Anyways, we see that Raina can hold up a conversation pretty easily with her mother and understand what is going on.
Something that I would like to point out that is very common for kids in the same stage as Raina is the fact that they question every little detail that is going on. For example, Raina asks,” Why, Why,” after her mom says that the grass is too long to walk in. Raina also tends to speak her consciousness out loud instead of keeping it to herself which again is normal for kids in the same age group as Raina.
The LASS is essentially a guide through the learning process of the English language and is very based on the environment and parenting that you grow up with. You can tell that Raina's mom is pretty good with Raina in teaching because she always makes sure that she has Raina's full attention before actually showing her something. The mother does a very good job of introducing her daughter to each new environment and helping Raina learn about what is going on around her and helping Raina familiarize herself with the setting. An example of this is when the blackbird is simply flying through the sky and the mother tells Raina to look into the sky in order to see it.
Another thing that I would like to point out is the fact that multiple times throughout the transcript, there were words that were used in all capital letters. What the author is trying to do is make the word look a bit more detailed and stand out more than it already is. The author emphasizes the word look a lot throughout this transcript and I believe that it does a very good job of fully capturing the attention of the audience and making it clear as to what they are talking about throughout the text.
Raina has also shown me that she can use conditional statements and tenses. An example of this is in the text when she states, “can we skip this way?” She does this and what it does is allow herself to ask her mom a question about something that she does not know the answer to. The conditional tense is meant to speculate about something that could happen in the future, what might have happened, or what was wished to happen and I think that this tense was used appropriately in doing so.
Furthermore, in most cases of kids that are in the same stage as Raina is in right now, kids are not likely to say much more than a few words if even to get their guardian's attention. For most kids, they will say maybe one or two words that try to capture someone's attention but I feel as if Raina is very advanced for her age in the fact that she can withhold a conversation and respond to everything effectively. She is also very good at asking questions to further her knowledge and clearly has a good understanding of simple conversation skills. There is still some development to be done, but with the excellent teaching of Raina from her mother, she should be well on her way to advancing a lot more.
AO1: 2/5 Hi Shamus! I feel that you do show that you understand the text, but your sentence structure impedes upon your communication with the reader. You use many sentences that tend to get the reader lost in your words. I also feel that you bring up many ideas, but these ideas aren’t backed by any theories. You state that many kids “question every little detail”, and I feel that you could tie these into a theory.
ReplyDeleteAO4: 6/15 I also feel that your understanding of the linguistic concepts remains limited. This is because you didn’t bring up any theorists. Halliday is a common theorist that could have been mentioned and a few theories could have been connected back to him. You also brought up LASS but you didn’t mention who developed this theory.
AO5: 2/5 Finally, this section for grading ties back into my last comment well. In this, you have a limited analysis and selection of language data. This is because you don’t reference many theories or theorists.
Hi Shamus
ReplyDeleteAO1- 3 marks. I can tell you have a clear understanding of the text however, some of your sentences could have been structured differently. In the beginning of your blog you start off by “Based on the information and what I just read,” which is unnecessary and could have been worded better.
AO4- 6 marks. I can tell you have a clear understanding of the linguistic concepts. However, never mentioned any theories to back up your points. Due to this, I can only give you 6 marks.
AO5- 2 marks. You did mention any theories and your structure was hard to follow. I feel like you only have a limited analyses. I would then give you 2 marks.

ReplyDeleteHey shamus, I liked your blog and I enjoyed reading it.

For ao1, i can see that you understand the texts meaning, context, and audience as well as providing reference to characteristic features of the article, I would give you a score of 3
A04
For a04, I see that you have an understanding of linguistic features and issues, as well as using clear reference and understanding to wider study and theories. On top of this, you also have a reference to linguistic approaches taken by different theorists, 7/15
A05
You also had clear selection analysis and synthesis of language data and quotes, for this I will give you a score of 3 marks
Overall Score 13/25
